About
A Core Needle Biopsy (CNB) is a minimally invasive procedure used to evaluate a suspicious area in the breast. It helps determine whether a breast lump or abnormality is benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
During the procedure, a hollow needle is inserted through the skin to collect small samples of breast tissue. Local anaesthesia is used to numb the area, ensuring comfort. The biopsy is usually guided by imaging techniques such as ultrasound, mammography (stereotactic) or MRI, depending on the location of the abnormality.
The collected tissue samples are sent to a pathology lab for detailed examination under a microscope. CNB provides accurate information about the nature of the abnormality and is essential for planning further treatment if needed.
This procedure is safe, quick & typically does not require stitches. Some bruising or mild discomfort may occur, but most patients can return to normal activities immediately after the biopsy.
Core Needle Biopsy plays a key role in early diagnosis and helps avoid unnecessary surgery in many cases.
